Freeport, Bahamas - Students in the Medical Education Review Program (MERP) recently donated canned and dry food goods to the Grand Bahama Red Cross.

The name of the program, “YES WE CAN,”  is MERP students’ response to the question, “Can we help reduce hunger in The Bahamas?” At the end of their rigorous 15-week medical preparatory program, MERP students find they have a food surplus as they are preparing to leave the island. Partnering with the Red Cross was their solution to addressing their overstock while simultaneously helping the community.

Mrs. Meg Osman, director of student services, facilitated the food drive.   Mrs. Mary Culmer, director of the Grand Bahama Red Cross, was on hand to accept the donation along with Mr. Londell Albury, executive administrator at Ross University School of Medicine.

“I think the food drive was a great idea, otherwise a lot of things would have gone to waste,” said Stacey Sharp, a student enrolled in MERP.

A goal of the MERP program is to establish partnerships with the wider Grand Bahama community that will have a positive impact on the island. This donation to the Red Cross is one of many ventures MERP implements toward that goal.
